Description
The drinking fountain opposite Allendale Library is a Grade II listed structure, dated 1902. It is made of stone, granite, and cast iron. The fountain features a square stone base with a rectangular trough at the front and small semicircular basins with taps on either side. A pointed-arched panel displays an inscription in memory of Trooper John Joseph Glendinning, who was killed at Klip Drift, South Africa, in 1902, and is adorned with a grotesque lion's head.
Above the fountain, a Gothic canopy is supported by four polished granite columns, which enclose an urn. The fountain is surrounded by a dwarf wall that has raised copings, along with low cast-iron standards and railings.
