Description

The National Westminster Bank, located at Nos. 14 and 16 Westgate Street in Launceston, is a bank building that now serves as offices. It was constructed around 1870 and features the inscription "Launceston Bank." The building is made of polychrome faced rubble with freestone dressings and has a steep slate roof with three coped gables at the front. It has a large, irregular U-shaped plan and is designed in a High Victorian style, consisting of two storeys plus attics and a five-bay range.

The windows are mullioned, with original horned sashes on the attics and first floor, while the ground floor has fixed lights. The left-hand bay includes a two-light window above a three-light and a four-light window, both with a relieving arch and arched lights. The next bay features a squat three-light window above a doorway, followed by three bays that have similar transomed windows with hoodmoulds on the ground floor. There is a ventilated gable above a single-light and three-light window, a two-light window over a three-light window, and a large gable with a two-light window above a canted slate-roofed corbelled oriel over a three-light window, with a two-light window above a doorway on the right. Both doorways have pointed arches with trefoils in the blind tympanae, set under polychrome relieving arches and hoodmoulds that enclose the inner order over nook shafts, and retain their original doors.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
