Description

Nos. 20, 20A, and 22 on Westgate Street in Launceston are two small town houses with later shops, dating from the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco, likely over rubble, and feature a rag slate roof with a polygonal end on the left and a brick stack on the right. They are arranged on a double-depth corner site and consist of two storeys with a three-window range and a canted two-window range that returns into Dockey on the left.

The first floor has original 12-pane hornless sash windows. The left side of the Westgate Street front features a late 19th-century irregular double shopfront with end pilasters. There are return lights to a splayed doorway left of centre, which has a pilaster on its left and a slender turned mullion on its right. The shopfront includes bracket heads that form arched lights, a moulded entablature with round-arched consoles over the pilasters, and a fascia. To the right, there is a 20th-century three-light transomed shop window, and a blind window above a round-arched house doorway at the far right, which has a six-panel door and a fanlight with coloured glass.

The return into Dockey features a late 19th-century three-light transomed shop window at the splayed corner, with segmental arched lights, sunk spandrels, and end pilasters with consoles flanking the fascia and moulded cornice. This cornice continues to the left over a former shop front that is now partly blocked and has a 20th-century door on its left. The interior has not been inspected.
