Description

This is an 18th-century public house, later converted into a shop with accommodation, located on Westgate Street in Launceston. The building is rendered on a probable rubble base, with slatehanging to the left-hand gable and part of the rear wing. It has a steep rag slate roof with a gabled dormer on the far right, possibly incorporating part of the adjacent building at No. 37. A single 17th-century crested clay ridge tile is present, along with later plain ridge tiles. There are rubble lateral and rear stacks.

The building has a deep plan, including a rear wing. It is two storeys plus an attic, and features a three-window front. The windows are mostly mid-19th century twelve-pane hornless sashes, with one blind window on the right. A wide, partly-blocked former carriage doorway is on the left, now containing an early 20th-century V-jointed boarded door and a 20th-century shop front with V-jointed boards, a plate-glass window, and a doorway. The rear wing dates to the 18th century and originally had an open verandah, now with mid-19th century fenestration with small panes overlooking the through passage.

Inside, there is a mid-19th century stick-baluster staircase, panelled doors which have been boarded over, and a probable original roof structure which has not been inspected.
