Description
The United Club, located at No. 16 Portland Square in Workington, is an early 19th-century building that was originally a house. It is constructed of painted rusticated ashlar and features a string course, a modillioned eaves cornice, and V-jointed quoins set on a chamfered plinth. The roof is made of graduated greenslate with coped gables and a left kneeler, along with rendered chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays. The entrance includes a panelled door with an intersecting glazing-bar fanlight, situated within a pilastered doorcase. The windows are sash style, framed in painted stone surrounds. The left return wall also has sash windows, some of which include glazing bars, all in painted stone surrounds.
