Description
No. 20 Portland Square, which includes No. 5 Brunswick Street, is a pair of houses that have been converted into an office. They were built in the late 1870s or 1880s. The facade facing Portland Square is made of calciferous sandstone, with a quarry-faced finish at the basement level and a bracketed cornice. The roof is covered with graduated slate and is hipped at the corner, featuring a white brick ridge chimney stack. The Brunswick Street facade is constructed of English garden wall bond brickwork, with a cornice made of modillioned brick and white brick. It also has a graduated slate roof, with ridge and end brick chimney stacks, the end one being reduced in size.
The building is two storeys high, with three bays on the Portland Square side and a single-bay return. The Brunswick Street facade has a lower roof line and consists of six bays. The Portland Square house is the end of a terrace, featuring a high central doorway that has been fitted with a sash window set in a stone architrave. There are flanking canted bay windows that extend from the basement, with paired sash windows above them and a single sash window above the former doorway, all within stone surrounds. The return side has paired sash windows in plain brick reveals. The Brunswick Street facade has an off-centre panelled door with an overlight, set within a pilastered stone porch. The sash windows here are in brick reveals, with slightly-arched brick heads and stone sills. The interior has not been inspected.
