Description
No. 28 Portland Square, along with Nos. 6 and 8 Brunswick Street, is a group of three houses that have been converted into offices. They were built in the late 1850s or early 1860s and feature Flemish bond brickwork with painted stone dressings on a squared plinth, a string course, and stone-bracketed metal gutters. The buildings have a graduated greenslate roof and 19th-century ridge and gable brick chimney stacks.
This two-storey terrace consists of two bays for most houses, except for No. 6, which has three bays. No. 28 Portland Square is the leftmost house, followed by No. 8 Brunswick Street, with No. 6 Brunswick Street on the right. The three-bay house has a central door, while the others have doors on the right side with overlights, accessed by steps and set within Ionic porches. The windows are sash style within stone architraves, and there are two canted bay windows. The interior has not been inspected. These buildings do not appear on the Asquith Survey of Carlisle from 1853 but are present on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map.
