Description
Nos. 21 and 22 Portland Square, along with No. 4 Wilfred Street, are three houses in a terrace that have been converted into offices. They were built in the late 1850s and late 1860s. The buildings feature Flemish bond brickwork with light headers set on a stone plinth, with all dressings made of calciferous sandstone that is partly quarry-faced. There is a sill band and a stone-bracketed metal gutter. The roofs are slate, hipped at the corner, and include 20th-century skylights, with brick chimney stacks at the ridge.
Nos. 21 and 22 Portland Square are two-storey buildings with two bays each, while the corner house, No. 4 Wilfred Street, has two bays facing Portland Square and three bays on Wilfred Street. The houses on Portland Square have 20th-century doors and overlights set in prostyle Ionic porches. They feature bay windows, except for No. 22, with the bay windows on No. 4 Wilfred Street being canted. The sash windows have glazing bars and are framed in stone architraves with panelled aprons. The facade on Wilfred Street originally had a central door, which has been replaced by windows in a pilastered surround. The sash windows here are similar to those on Portland Square, with the former entrance featuring a console-bracketed cornice above.
The interiors have not been inspected. These buildings do not appear on Asquith's Survey of Carlisle from 1853, and only Nos. 21 and 22 are shown on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map.
