Description
Nos 41 and 42 on Parliament Street, built around 1870-1880, are office buildings designed in a late Italianate classical style, similar to the adjacent Nos 38 and 39. The buildings are faced with Portland stone and topped with a slate roof. They rise four storeys, with a tall ground floor situated above a basement, and feature five windows across the front. The ground floor has a central entrance flanked by a pair of windows with a mullion-pier to the right, while the left-hand pair has been altered. All windows are framed by plain Doric pilasters and an entablature. The upper floors have sashes with eared architraves; the first-floor windows are pedimented, and those on the second floor have swept cornices. The façade includes string courses and a crowning entablature with a bracketed cornice and blocking course. Additionally, ornamental cast iron balconettes adorn the first floor, and heavy cast iron area railings are present.
