Description
No 44 Parliament Street is a terraced town house built around 1753, with alterations made in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick and features a slate roof. It has four storeys, a basement, and a dormered mansard, with a facade that is three windows wide. The ground floor is channelled and houses a c1900 Post Office, which includes a pilaster-mullioned window and a doorway to the right. The upper floors have recessed sash windows set in stucco architraves, with the first floor windows featuring cornices and the central window adorned with a pediment on consoles. There are plat bands and sill bands, a main cornice above the second floor, and an attic cornice with a balustraded parapet. The first floor also has an early 19th century cast iron balcony, while late 19th century cast iron area railings are present. Inside, the house retains an elegant turned baluster staircase, and the first floor drawing room boasts fine Rococo plasterwork on the ceiling. Along with No 43, it is the only surviving terrace house from the original Parliament Street, which opened in 1749-50.
