Description

No 43 Parliament Street is a terraced town house built around 1753. It is constructed of grey stock brick and features a slate roof. The building stands three storeys high, with a basement and a dormered mansard, and it has three windows across its front. The entrance is located on the right side and includes a panelled door with a fanlight, set within a wooden doorcase supported by three-quarter Doric columns, with dosserets and an open bracketed pediment. The Doric capitals are also used in the architrave above the door and as imposts for the archivolt, which has a keystone. The windows are recessed sashes beneath gauged flat arches. A plat band and sill band create a pseudo-pedestal effect on the first floor. The building is topped with a stone cyma recta modillion cornice and a blocking course. There are late 19th-century cast iron railings in the area.

Inside, the house features a good interior with a cut string staircase that has a rare Chinese Chippendale fretwork balustrade, along with moulded cornices, doorcases, and shutters. The main rooms contain fine statuary marble chimneypieces, likely crafted by Sir Henry Cheere. This house, along with No 44, is one of the only surviving terrace houses from the original Parliament Street, which was opened between 1749 and 1750.
