Description

23 Portland Square, which includes No. 3 Wilfred Street, is a pair of houses that have been converted into one office. They were built in the late 1860s or early 1870s. The structure is made of red brick resting on a chamfered calciferous sandstone plinth, with all dressings made from this material. It features raised quoins, sill bands, and a stone-bracketed metal gutter. The roof is hipped and covered with graduated local slate, and it has gabled dormers along with rebuilt ridge and end brick chimney stacks.

The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a three-bay return on Wilfred Street and a lower two-storey, three-bay house at No. 3 Wilfred Street. The central entrance has a panelled door and fanlight set in a Venetian Gothic surround, which includes a red sandstone colonnette and a heavy bracketed hood. The sash windows are framed in quoined architraves; the window to the right of the door is paired, while those on the ground floor have segmental arches. The return wall features central paired sash windows, with the same window style as the facade. No. 3 Wilfred Street has a central panelled door and overlight in a stone surround with a cornice, along with sash windows in quoined architraves. The interiors have not been inspected. These buildings do not appear on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map.
