Description
Nos. 1-5 Portland Square, which includes No. 3 Brunswick Street and No. 4 Alfred Street North, are a group of seven houses that have been converted into offices. They were built in the late 1860s or early 1870s and feature calciferous sandstone ashlar on a chamfered plinth, with raised quoins, a sill band, and a stone-bracketed metal gutter. The left side is finished in red brick, while the right side is in white glazed brick with stone dressings. The roofs are made of graduated greenslate, with gable dormers on No. 1 Portland Square and continuous 20th-century box dormers on Nos. 2-5, which are slate hung.
The main facade consists of two storeys with a mix of three-bay and two-bay houses, with three-bay houses on the returns. The panelled doors, some of which are partly glazed and have overlights, are set within prostyle Tuscan porches. The three-bay houses feature flanking bay windows, with No. 5 being more ornate, showcasing round-headed lights in pilastered surrounds with large false keystones, and the bay has quoins and sill brackets. The two-bay houses have canted bay windows. Above, there are sash windows in stone architraves, some with eared details.
The left return is No. 3 Brunswick Street, which has similar details to the facade but is finished in red brick instead of ashlar. The right return is No. 4 Alfred Street North, which mirrors the facade's details but is made of white brick instead of ashlar. The interiors have undergone some office conversions, but many still retain panelled doors and moulded plaster ceiling cornices with central plaster roundels in the principal rooms. The plans for No. 3, created by C & J Armstrong and dated 7 January 1867, are held at the Cumbria County Record Office, although they differ slightly from the completed building.
