Description

Two houses, number 6 and 7, form part of a terrace in Portland Square, Carlisle. They were built in the late 1860s or 1870s and are now used as a surgery. The houses are constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar with a moulded plinth and feature shaped half- and full-gabled dormers. They have a common graduated greenslate roof with 20th-century skylights and a shared yellow brick ridge chimney stack. Each house is two and a half storeys high and two bays wide, with identical detailing. Steps lead up to right panelled doors, each with a fanlight set within a shouldered surround and columned shaped porch. There are paired-sash squared bay windows on the ground floor, and paired sashes above. Single sashes are located above the doors and in the dormers, with the first-floor sashes under hood moulds. The interiors have not been inspected. The buildings are of group value with other properties.
