Description
A red sandstone wall with cast-iron railings, dating to 1870, surrounds a garden square in Carlisle. The wall is low and has a chamfered top edge, above which are patterned cast-iron railings with spearheads. Gate openings are present in the centre of each side of the wall, although the gates are missing. The wall is punctuated by octagonal gate piers, finished with ball-and-spear finials. The gate opening on the west side has been enlarged. The garden square originally existed as an open space, later made into a private residents garden following the addition of buildings in 1853. Records from the Carlisle Journal (1870) document the landscaping, planting, and inauguration of the garden by the Mayor, who planted a tree in each corner. The railings were cast by Lees & Graham of Carlisle, as indicated by an impressed founder’s name.
