Description

Cavendish House is a house that is part of a terrace, built in 1832 for the Reverend Thomas Woodrow. It features Flemish bond brickwork on a chamfered plinth, with all dressings made of calciferous sandstone. The building has V-jointed quoins and an eaves cornice, topped with a graduated greenslate roof that has coped gables and dormer windows. The end brick chimney stacks have been rebuilt. The house has two storeys and three bays, with a double-depth layout and a central stair plan. The central entrance has a panelled door and overlight, accessed by steps, and is framed by a prostyle Ionic porch. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set in stone architraves, and there are basement casement windows. The interior has not been inspected. Historical records from the Carlisle Journal in 1918 mention the house's deeds from 1832 and its connection to Thomas Woodrow, who was the grandfather of USA President Woodrow Wilson. Woodrow served as a minister at the Annetwell Street Chapel in Carlisle before he and his family emigrated to the USA. The Carlisle Journal also recorded the death of his wife in 1836.
