Description
Nos. 11 and 13 and the rear cottage in Workington are two houses and a cottage/workshop that together form one property, dating from the late 18th century. The buildings feature incised cement render with an eaves cornice and V-jointed quoins set on a moulded plinth. They have a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and kneelers, along with cement-rendered chimney stacks. The cottage/workshop has painted roughcast walls and a battlemented parapet, topped with a hipped graduated greenslate roof and brick chimney stacks on ashlar bases.
The property is two storeys high and consists of five bays, with an extension behind Nos. 7 and 9 to the left and a single-storey, two-bay cottage/workshop at the rear. A central through archway features double wrought-iron gates beneath an interlace wooden overlight, all within a round-arched quoined surround. The sash windows are framed in painted stone architraves, and there is a side doorway leading from the passage to No. 13. The rear doorways originally had 19th-century Tuscan doorcases, which have since been replaced with 20th-century replicas.
Inside, there is an upper-floor panelled room above the archway, and the room to the left boasts a late 18th-century moulded plaster ceiling. Additionally, a lead pump in the rear ground-floor kitchen is marked with the initials ITM and the date 1792. The cottage/workshop also features sash windows with intersecting glazing bars.
