8 and 9, Shay Lane

Nos 8 and 9 on Shay Lane are a house and cottage. The house dates from the 17th century and was altered in the late 18th or early 19th century, while the cottage is from the late 18th or early 19th century. The rear is constructed of squared coursed rubble, and the front is rendered, topped with a stone slate roof. The house has two storeys with three bays, and the cottage has a single bay.

No 8 features two later doorways at the center. To the right, there is a four-light window with two removed mullions and a chamfered surround. On the extreme right, there is a fire-window with a chamfered surround. The first floor has two four-light flat-faced mullioned windows, each with two removed mullions, and a recent window to the right. The cottage has an entrance and one two-light flat-faced mullion window on each floor. The left gable has copings, and there are rendered stacks with a string course.

At the rear of No 8, there are a five-light and a two-light flat-faced mullion window on each floor, with some blocked lights and removed mullions. There is also a central part-blocked first-floor taking-in door. The cottage features a three-light flat-faced mullion window on each floor and an entrance. Between Nos 8 and 7, there is a through-passage that includes an early blocked entrance to No 8 with wooden jambs. The interior of No 8 mainly reflects the later alterations.
