Description
No. 7 Shay Lane is a house dated 1632, believed to have been built for John Dixon. The building features rendered walls and a stone slate roof, following a cross-passage plan. It has two storeys and four bays. The central porch has a recent door with a stone seat, while the inner doorway is Tudor-arched with a studded door.
To the right of the porch, there is a six-light window with a king-mullion and a two-light window, both of which are double-chamfered and have hoodmoulds. Between these windows is an inserted 19th-century window. To the left, there is a later or altered window alongside a five-light double-chamfered window, both with hoodmoulds. The far left features a Tudor-arched entrance to a through-passage.
On the first floor, there are double-chamfered windows of three, four, three, and four lights, along with a central Tudor-arched taking-in door. The gable copings on the right are hollow-chamfered, resting on a moulded kneeler with a shaped finial. A central stack is present, and the rear of the house projects to the left, featuring double-chamfered windows on both floors with two, three, and four lights. The extreme right has a Tudor-arched entrance to the through-passage, and the right gable displays a large projecting chimney breast that narrows to a broad gable stack. To the right of this is an entrance with a tablet above that reads: "I D AN O DOM 1632."
Inside, the cross-passage runs behind the central chimney breast, which has a broad, arched fireplace in the left room. The two rooms on the right feature good 17th-century oak panelling, each with a broad, arched fireplace in the right gable, and the rear room includes a small fire window. The entrance in the right gable has a stone baffle screen, and there are more fireplaces and panelling located upstairs.
