Description
Frogmore Cottage and No 2 Frogmore is a house and adjoining cottage dating from the 18th century, with the cottage extended around the early 19th century. There are 20th-century extensions at the rear and on the left side. The buildings are constructed of cob over a stone rubble plinth, with Frogmore Cottage rendered and featuring wooden lintels. The roofs are thatched with wheat reed, with corrugated iron covering the thatch of the 18th-century part of No 2 Frogmore, and asbestos slate over the 19th-century wing of No 2 Frogmore. There are brick axial and gable stacks.
The layout includes a 2-room house on the left and a 1-room-plan cottage on the right. The house has a central entrance between the original rooms, while the cottage has a straight flight stair to the left of the doorway and direct access to the room. A 1-room-plan wing was added to the right of the cottage around the early 19th century, along with thick cross walls from the 19th-century extension at the rear of the cottage. There are also 20th-century lean-to extensions at the rear of both the cottage and house, as well as on the left side of the house.
The exterior features two storeys. The house on the left has a symmetrical three-window front with a central doorway and a lean-to on the left, which has a 20th-century door and windows. The cottage on the right has a two-window front with a doorway on the left, an old ledged split door, and old two-light casements in the middle of the original cottage. There is a 20th-century window on the ground floor of the 19th-century extension (to the right) and an original 16-pane hornless sash above.
The interior of No 2 Frogmore, which was the only part inspected, is virtually unaltered, featuring original moulded ceiling joists, a plank and muntin partition that divides the original stair from the chamber, original plank doors with old latches, and the feet of original trusses visible. Some fireplaces are partly blocked, and there is a 19th-century iron grate in one chamber.
