Description
Sandoes is a small house dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, with rebuilding and possible extension occurring around the mid-18th century. It is constructed of painted slatestone rubble with an asbestos slate roof (originally thatched), featuring a brick chimney over the left (west) gable, an axial stack, and a hip to the east. The house has a central stair plan, with a two-room layout in the 18th century western part and a single room surviving from the earlier house to the east.
The south front of the symmetrical 18th century section has three windows. A doorway is positioned off-centre to the right, with a blind window above, flanked by four-pane sash windows with horns, set in slightly recessed openings with shallow brick arches over the ground floor. The older eastern part features a first-floor window roughly central and a lower window partially below and to the left, where the first floor sill sits just above a wooden lintel. A blocked doorway is located on the ground floor to the right, and a doorway exists at the rear opposite. The eaves were likely heightened in the 19th century.
Inside, a light pine muntin and plank partition separates rooms to the left of a straight, mid-18th century staircase. Bowtell moulded beams are present in the left-hand room, alongside a later wooden floor in the middle room. The room to the right retains roughly squared beams and evidence of a removed staircase in the southeast corner. A large chimney breast is present in each room. The first-floor rooms and roof structure were not inspected, although the roof structure is reported to be very old. A garden wall to the south is also part of the listed item.
