Description
Farmhouse, dating to around the middle of the 18th century. It was originally known as Penhale Farm. The walls are of painted and rendered cob, and the roof is covered with asbestos slate, likely replacing an original thatched covering. Brick chimneys are on the gable ends, with a scantle slate roof over a mid- to late 19th-century addition with its own gable, which is lower in height to the west. The original layout features a main room on either side of a central entrance passage that leads to a rear staircase within an outshut. This outshut extends behind the left-hand room to form a small service room. Another service room was added to the west gable end, connected by the original back doorway. The south front has a single window from the 19th century on the left side, and a symmetrical three-window original front on the right, with a central doorway. The doorway has a 20th-century ledged door, and the windows are 20th-century 2-light casements. Inside, the layout is largely unchanged, with a dog-leg staircase and 2-panel doors fitted with original HL hinges. The first floor and roof spaces were not inspected, but are said to contain historic fabric. The building is included on the list for its contribution to the surrounding group of buildings.
