Description

Vine Cottage is a house dating from around the 17th century, with remodels in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is constructed of painted slatestone and cob, with render over the cob. The north side features a wheat-reed thatched roof and brick chimneys at the gable ends, while the south side has a ground scantle slate roof with a hip to the south. The layout likely started as a three-room through passage plan. The upper end was partly rebuilt in the 18th century, and the lower end was remodeled in the early 19th century, though it retains a rear projection that may have been a stair turret.

The house is two storeys high with an east front that has two and three windows. The earlier left section has an irregular two-window front with 20th-century small paned two-light casements. The right section, rebuilt in the 18th century, was originally symmetrical with a central doorway and wide window openings. A 20th-century window has replaced the doorway, and a doorway with a top-glazed 20th-century door is now in the former window position on the left. There is a small window above the doorway, likely a 20th-century addition. Flanking this section are early 19th-century 12-pane two-light casements. The rear of the house has an irregular four-window arrangement with an uneven eaves line. To the left, there is a wide window with a three-light casement, and a projection on the far right features a doorway with a 20th-century door. Most of the rear windows are 20th-century casements with small panes. The interior has not been inspected.
