Description

Kyolas is a small house dating from the early 18th century, which was remodelled in the early to mid 18th century and extended to the southwest in the 20th century. The exterior features painted slatestone rubble up to the level of the wooden lintels at the front, while the rest is primarily cob with a good surviving texture. The roof is thatched with wheat-reed and has brick chimneys at the gable ends.

The house has a two-room through passage plan, with a larger hall/kitchen on the left and a smaller heated parlour on the right. It is two storeys high and has an irregular three-window east front. The original doorway is off-centre to the right and features a four-panel door with moulded sides. The wooden lintels above the doors and windows are chamfered. The left-hand window in the altered wall may have replaced two original windows of the hall.

All the windows are early to mid 18th century 2-light casements, with six panes per light, except for the right-hand window which has eight panes per light, and the first-floor window to the left of the middle which has one side opening casement. All windows retain their original wide glazing bars and much of the original glass.

The interior is said to be little altered, featuring bowtell moulded beams and pine muntin and plank partitions, with the chimney breast remaining in situ. Kyolas is a slightly altered house that has not been extended to the rear and showcases rare early casement windows. The original internal plan is likely intact, which is now uncommon in houses of this type.
