Description

Rose Cottage is a small house with a front garden wall and gate, dating from the early to mid 18th century, with a 20th-century extension to the rear. The building features painted stone rubble and cob with a rendered front, topped by a wheat-reed thatched roof and brick chimneys at the gable ends. It has a two-room through passage plan, consisting of a larger hall/kitchen on the left and a smaller heated parlour on the right, along with a single-storey 20th-century addition at the back.

The house is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical three-window east front. Most windows are original 2-light casements with wide glazing bars and much of the original glass, featuring six panes per light on the first floor and eight panes per light on the ground floor. The slate sills and wooden lintels add to its character. The doorway is off-centre to the right and has a 20th-century door within a 20th-century glazed porch.

Inside, the cottage boasts ovolo-moulded beams and a large open fireplace with a cloam oven and a rough-hewn oak lintel in the left-hand room (kitchen or hall), while the right-hand room (parlour) has a smaller fireplace. The windows have original ovolo-moulded frames with a central mullion and ovolo-moulded glazing bars. The roof structure is said to be old. The front garden is enclosed by a coped rubble wall on three sides, featuring a circa 1900 braced wooden gate. This property is a rare example of early casement windows.
