Description
Nos. 3, 5, and 7 White Friars are a row of three cottages, likely built around 1800 and significantly restored. The buildings feature some sandstone, brown brick in English garden wall bond, and a grey slate roof that runs parallel to the street. They are two storeys high, with one window per cottage on the first storey, and two windows for No. 3 and one window each for Nos. 5 and 7 on the second storey.
The cottages have a sandstone-faced plinth and a central passage under a slightly cambered gauged brick head between Nos. 3 and 5. Access to No. 3 is via one step, while Nos. 5 and 7 have two steps. Each cottage has six-panel doors, with the bottom panels flush, the central panels fielded, and the top panels featuring raised crosses. The replaced doorcases include panelled pilasters, ribbed top rails beneath three-pane overlights, and plain friezes and cornices. All windows are replaced nearly flush 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills and wedge lintels. There is a cast-iron downspout at the centre, a stone eaves cornice, and two ridge chimneys. The rear of the cottages has been heavily restored and largely extended in the late 20th century.
The interior has not been inspected, but the exterior suggests the possibility of cellars, which are of interest in several properties in White Friars.
