Sundial Cottage

Sundial Cottage is a house, originally two or three cottages, dating to the late 17th century with alterations in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed squared ironstone with thatch and slate roofs, and brick ridge and end stacks. The house has a three-unit plan to the left of the ridge stack, formerly with a right end stack, and a two-unit lobby-entry plan to the right, with a single-unit extension to the far right featuring a lower slate roof. The façade has an eight-window range. A 20th-century door is located to the left, with a wood lintel, while an old plank door is to the right, set within a chamfered Tudor-arched wood surround in a two-storey gabled porch. The porch has stone piers supporting a rendered first floor. A further 20th-century door, with a wood lintel, is located in a 20th-century gabled porch to the far right. The windows are of irregular glazing with 2-, 3-, and 4-light casement windows, all with wood lintels. First-floor windows and those in the left-hand section of the house are leaded, while small 2-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion windows are present on the ground and first floors either side of the porch, with the window to the ground floor right being blocked. A stone-coped gable with kneelers is present to the left. Inside, there are four open fireplaces with chamfered bressumers, one featuring ogee stops, and another with ogee-stop-chamfered stone jambs. The interior also includes chamfered spine beams, one with wedge stops. An upstairs room has a stone fireplace with moulded jambs to the lintel. The roof is supported by collar trusses.
