Description

Swan House is a house dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared ironstone and features a thatch roof with brick ridge and end stacks. The building has a three-unit lobby-entry plan and is two storeys high with an attic, presenting a five-window range.

The entrance includes a 20th-century part-glazed door located to the left of centre, accompanied by a side-light and a wooden lintel. To the left, there is a double-leaf garden door, and to the right of centre, a 20th-century part-glazed door set within a 20th-century gabled porch. The windows are irregularly glazed, featuring one- and two-light casements, with two original two-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion windows on the first floor to the right of centre. The stone surrounds of other windows have survived.

The right gable end displays a three-light part-blocked ovolo-moulded stone mullion window on the ground floor with a hood mould, a similar window on the first floor, and a two-light window in the attic. There are also hollow-chamfered string courses at the attic floor level and above the attic window. The gable end has a chamfered plinth, quoins, and stone-coped gables with kneelers. At the rear, there is a lean-to extension that dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.

Inside, the house features ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams and an open fireplace with an ogee-stop-chamfered bressumer. There is also a stone corner fireplace with a moulded Tudor-arched head and a stone cellar. The building was formerly a public house known as The Swan.
