Description

1 and 2 Church Hill are two houses that also incorporate a shop and a former forge. They likely date from the 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features coursed limestone and ironstone rubble for the domestic parts, while the former forge is constructed of squared stone with a brick gable. The roofs are thatch and slate, with brick end stacks on each of the two main blocks and on the ridge of the forge.

The structure is two storeys high. The south gable end has a 20th-century door and shop window with wooden lintels on the ground floor, along with a three-light casement window above. To the left is the former forge, which includes part of large double plain board doors. A lean-to on the right has a 20th-century shop window that conceals part of the right flank. Beyond this, the thatched section of the building features a three-light small-paned iron-framed gudgeon-hung casement window with a wooden lintel on the ground floor, and two two-light casement windows above, with the thatch slightly lifted into eyebrows above them.

To the right again, the slate-roofed block, which has been heightened, includes a 20th-century door, a casement window, a blocked single-light window, another 20th-century door, and another two-light window at ground floor level. The first floor has two three-light casement windows, all with wooden lintels. The rendered flat-roofed block to the right is not of special interest. The interiors have not been inspected.
