School And Attached Wall

The building is a school dating from 1849, with later alterations and extensions. Constructed from coursed limestone rubble with a Collyweston stone slate roof, it features coped gables with shaped kneelers. Original iron ridge ventilators are present – two on the main block and one on each rear wing. A moulded stone ridge stack is on the rear wing, along with a later, rendered lateral stack.

The symmetrical main block has a window of 3 cusped lights, mirroring the clerestory of the nearby church, and a window of 2 cusped lights on either side. The original central gabled porch, with twin entrances, has been replaced by a 20th-century door with an overlight. A flat-topped dormer sits to the left of centre above. The right gable end, facing the street, includes two buttresses, a modified 20th-century window, and an oculus above.

The original porch to the rear wing, seemingly built into the right side of the gable end, has a coped gable and a plain board door with decorative hinges, featuring an arched head with a hood mould. The original rear wing has two windows each of 2 cusped lights and a gable end similar to the main block. A rendered addition with a hipped roof wraps around a corner. A lower, rendered, flat-roofed addition extends to the rear.

The playground wall, constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, has a plinth and shaped coping. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included on the list for its group value.
