Description
The School is a former school building, now serving as a community facility, dating from around 1840. It is constructed from squared and coursed Portland stone and features a slate roof in the Tudor Revival style. The building has a plain rectangular block facing Church Street, with a parallel wing that forms an L-shape, with the later wing set at an internal angle.
The exterior is single-storey with a three-bay front to Church Street, showcasing four-light stone chamfered-mullion casements beneath labels. The gables have coped verges; the northern gable is rendered, topped with a pinnacle, and partly obscured by a flat-roofed porch addition. The main gable on the left features a tall bellcote with a pointed arch and a steep gabled top, above a stone louvred lancet for the roof space, a small rectangular light, and plank doors within a flush surround, all accented with drip courses. To the left, slightly set back, the later wing mirrors this detailing, featuring a pinnacle above a small louvred lancet and a four-light mullioned casement.
On the playground side, the original building includes a large three-light chamfered-mullion casement without a drip and a plank door with a segmental head. The left side has a coped verge and a pinnacle, while the right side has a plain verge and a brick stack. The later wing is partly hidden by extensions with asbestos roofing.
Inside, the building consists of four bays with raised king-post trusses, and there is a large elliptical opening connecting the main schoolroom to the west wing.
