Description
The Wishing Well with flanking walls is located in Upwey, Weymouth, and dates from the mid to late 19th century, although it was rebuilt in 1991. It is constructed of rubble with some brickwork in the reveals, topped with a stone slab roof and stone and concrete paving. The well features a 2-bay recess built into the hillside, fronted by two flat 4-centred arches made of rock-faced stone voussoirs, which are set under a drip mould. Above the arches is a parapet with merlons. The arches are supported by a central cast-iron column with a circular shaft and base, topped with an Early English leaf capital and an octagonal abacus. Above the arches, there is an inset stone panel displaying the letters C T I G in Gothic script.
To the left, the stonework transitions into a retaining wall approximately 5 meters long, while to the right, it forms a boundary wall about 1.75 meters high and 10 meters long, which includes a small recessed area that once held an access gate from the adjoining lane. In front of the well, within the paved area, is a roughly circular well-head made of grotto-like open-textured stone, approximately 2.5 meters in diameter. Historically, this site was noted in the Torrington Diaries of 1782 as Upway Spring, a popular resort destination from Weymouth, and it continues to attract visitors.
