Description
No. 164 is a detached house located on Church Street in Upwey, dating from the late 17th century. It is built of squared and coursed rubble with a concrete tile roof. The house is a small cottage with a depth of one room and a two-room central entry plan. There is a large 20th-century lean-to at the back and a later brick extension to the right, which is not of special interest. The building has two storeys and features three windows, which are three-light small-pane wood casements set in hollow-mould stone mullions and surrounds, flush with the wall. The centre light on the first floor is a two-light window. The central entrance has a plank door beneath a deep flat stone lintel with a four-centred arch and sunk spandrels, resting on chamfered jambs; the lintel appears to be a later addition, as its mouldings do not match the jambs. To the left, there is a plain gable and a rendered stack. Inside, there is a large bressumer fire on stone cheeks to the right of the entry, but no other items of architectural or historical significance were noted.
