Description
The Castle School is a former school building dated 1840, with extensions added in the 20th century. It is constructed of rubble with a gable-ended slate roof and includes rubble stacks at the left gable and rear gable ends. The building’s plan consists of a schoolroom to the left, with a two-story schoolmaster’s house forming a cross-wing to the right, and a large 20th-century wing at the rear.
The left-hand range is single-story, featuring three original sash windows. The upper sashes of these windows retain twelve panes, while the lower panes have had their glazing bars removed. Each window is topped with a square hoodmould. A contemporary gabled porch is situated between the central and right-hand windows, featuring an arched doorway and a 19th-century four-panelled door. The gabled cross-wing to the right has a similar window on the ground floor, also with a hoodmould, and a four-pane casement window above. A lean-to against the end wall has a castellated wall built onto its front, with two 20th-century single-pane casement windows, also with hoodmoulds, one above the other. A plaque reading "Castle School 1840" is affixed to this wall. The interior has not been inspected. The building exhibits a picturesque vernacular style exterior with minimal alterations and forms a pleasing group with the later County Primary School opposite.
