Description

Ballowfield is a house located on Carperby Road in Askrigg, North Yorkshire. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with some 19th-century features. The building is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and has an L-shaped plan. It is two stories tall and includes a rear wing.

The south elevation features three first-floor windows and quoins at the corners. There is a central four-panel door beneath a three-pane overlight, all set in a chamfered, quoined, ashlar surround. The windows have timber mullions and are framed in 19th-century chamfered surrounds, including two bays of three-light windows and a two-light window above the door. Stone gutter brackets are present, and there are end stacks, with the right stack corbelled out from the apex of the gable.

To the left of the main house is a two-storey outbuilding that is not of special interest. The rear elevation features two round-arched single-light windows. The east elevation of the rear wing includes a 20th-century part-glazed door, a 19th-century three-light mullion window, and remnants of two mullion windows. On the first floor, there is a single-light chamfered window with a vertical iron bar, and a double-chamfered mullion window that was originally four lights but is now two.
