Description
The Ferns is a building that originally comprised three cottages and is now a single house. It dates from the early 18th century and the late 19th century. The structure is built of rubble with a stone slate roof and stands two storeys high. The front features four first-floor windows, along with an additional bay that projects forward to the left and does not have any first-floor windows. The openings are set beneath deep sandstone lintels. In the second bay, there is a four-panel door, and between the third and fourth bays, there is an additional window where a doorway to the right-hand cottage used to be. The projecting bay has a small sash window on the ground floor. The building has ashlar copings and stacks located at the ends and between the second and third bays. On the rear elevation, the projecting wing of the central cottage features a chamfered ashlar door surround. The right-hand cottage has two bays of two-light flush mullion windows with architraves, while the left-hand cottage has a three-light double-chamfered mullion window on the ground floor.
