Description

The Aysgarth War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in the early 1920s, with an addition for the Second World War.

Constructed from rough-hewn limestone and ashlar sandstone, the memorial features a circular plan. It consists of a pedestal topped with a small street lamp, supported by four decorative scrolled wrought iron struts. The structure is made of coursed rough-hewn limestone blocks, with an ashlar sandstone frieze, capstone, and plinth. It stands on a single-step circular stone base, raised on a circular podium with a gently inclined surface.

On the south side of the pedestal, a bronze plaque reads: "REMEMBER ALL WHO SHARED IN THE GREAT WAR THESE OF AYSGARTH GAVE THEIR LIVES" followed by three names. A secondary bronze plaque on the north side states: "THIS TABLET IS ERECTED IN GRATEFUL THANKS FOR THE SAFE RETURN OF ALL WHO SERVED FROM THIS TOWNSHIP IN THE SECOND GREAT WAR 1939 – 1945."

The capstone features a moulded cornice and is coned, with a flat upper surface for the lamp. It has four semi-circular projections aligned from the north-west to south-east and from south-west to north-east. Each projection has an inscribed letter that spells "THEY" when read anti-clockwise from the south-west side. The frieze is inscribed with the words "LIVE," "HEARD," "FELT," and "DIED," also read anti-clockwise from the west face. The plinth is inscribed with the years "1914 .1918."
