Description

Lower Grange is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with some 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of squared rubble and has a graduated stone slate roof. The building features a two-unit plan and stands two storeys tall, with quoins at the corners.

The entrance door has been inserted into a double-chamfered cavetto-moulded window, with a similar two-light window to the right and an arched light with an enriched lintel to the left. On the first floor, there is a similar blind arched light, a three and two-light recessed flat-faced mullion window from the late 18th century, and a two-light double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullion window. The gable entrance, which is now blocked, has a chamfered surround and an obtuse-angled lintel, and there is a gable chimney stack.

The four-bay rear of the house is mostly from the 19th century and includes a round-headed door surround. Inside, the building retains a full-height wattle and daub timber-framed partition with an ogee-shaped door lintel. There are also chamfered principal beams and an 18th-century fireplace featuring a rosette motif and a moulded hood. The timber-framed screen is a rare example of the timber-framed tradition in Saddleworth. A date stone from an adjoining wing, which has since been demolished, read "ISMS 1659".
