Description
Old Castle Farmhouse and the attached byre are located on the east side of Healaugh, off the road leading to Reeth, Fremington, and Arkengarthdale. The farmhouse dates from the early 18th century, while the byre is probably from the later 18th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with a stone slate roof.
The farmhouse is a two-cell, direct-entry house with an outshut at the rear and the byre to the right. It has two storeys and features two first-floor windows. The entrance is a board door, and there are casement windows in chamfered stone surrounds, which show evidence of former mullions, except for a single-light fire window on the extreme left. The left gable has coping and a shaped kneeler, and there is a ridge stack, although the left end stack is missing.
The byre consists of several builds and includes one board door and two stable doors, with a fixed window on the extreme right.
