Description
No. 86 Main Street, which includes No. 1 New Street, is a shop and house likely built in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed mixed rubble with quoins and has a slate roof. It features a double-depth plan with a splayed corner facing New Street.
The exterior consists of three storeys. The Main Street facade has two windows, while the New Street side has one window. The shop-front is centered on the splayed corner and includes a corniced fascia that wraps around over one window on each side. Each of these windows has two round-arched lights supported by slender shafts and responds, flanked by pilasters with round-headed panels. A former doorway in the splayed corner has been converted into a one-light window that matches the style of the other windows. The Main Street facade also features a doorway with a matching surround and two internal steps leading up to a recessed panelled and part-glazed door. To the left, there is a window with altered glazing, and hornless sashed windows with margin panes are present on the first and second floors, with the second-floor windows being shorter. The right-hand return side has one and two windows, including the doorway to No. 1 New Street, which has matching openings. The rear of the building has sashed windows with glazing bars and a fixed stair-window with coloured margin panes.
The interior has not been inspected. This building forms a group with Nos. 3 and 5 New Street to the right and with Nos. 7 and 9 New Street attached to these.
