Description
No. 20 St Alban Street is a mid-19th century house with a shop that also faces New Street. The building features painted brickwork and a slate roof, and it has a recessed quadrant corner. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and has one window on each floor, all of which are sash windows. The upper floor has a 16-pane sash window set in reveals above a replacement oriel window with an 8:12:8-pane configuration and scalloped lead capping.
The ground floor showcases the original wide square shop front, supported by pilasters and moulded brackets, with paired 2-light casements leading to the basement. The quadrant corner has a 16-pane window above a blank light and a pair of 19th-century part-glazed doors, which are located on one step across the corner. The building features a small plinth, a sill band at the second floor, and a coped parapet.
On the return front, there are three windows, including two blank lights and one 16-pane sash window at the first and second floors. The ground floor shop front mirrors the one on the main front but has a slightly bowed fascia, and it includes a 16-pane sash window. Centrally located is a six-panel fielded door with a radial fanlight, also on one step, and the sill band continues from the front. The rear gable is rendered and has a small stair light, along with a brick stack on the party wall. The interior has not been inspected.
