Description
No. 20 Back Lane is a house that may have originally been an agricultural building. It likely dates from the late 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th century and more recently. The structure is built from mixed random rubble with large irregular quoins and features a slate roof, which was previously stone slate. The house has a double-depth, double-fronted plan and stands three storeys high with two windows on the front.
On the ground floor, there is a doorway with a panelled-pilaster architrave and a cornice supported by simple curved brackets, flanked by four-pane sashed windows. The first floor features two large canted flat-roofed wooden oriel windows with six-pane sashed glazing and simple panelled aprons. Above these, the second floor has two tall half-dormers that currently have plain double-glazing, which is considered unsympathetic to the building's character. The house has gable chimneys.
The interior has not been inspected. This property forms a group with Nos. 18 and 19, which are adjacent to the left.
