Description
Nos. 7 and 9 New Street are a pair of houses in a terrace, likely built in the mid to late 19th century. They are constructed from coursed mixed rubble with quoins on the left side and feature a graduated slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, with halls that are adjoining.
The buildings rise three storeys over cellars and have one window on each floor, along with a central doorway arrangement. The doorways are paired and framed by a double architrave with panelled side pilasters, a plain slab partition in the middle, a plain frieze, and enriched consoles supporting a prominent moulded cornice topped with a shallow hipped roof. There are steps leading up to the recessed doors, which have been altered. Each house features a large rectangular sash window with margin panes on the main floors and a square 9-pane sash window on the second floor. There are deep lateral chimney stacks located at the left gable and at the junction with No. 11 to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
These houses are part of an important group in the town centre, alongside Nos. 3 and 5, which are located to the left.
