Description
2 and 4 New Street is a late Georgian building featuring three storeys with stucco elevations, partially scribed, and some channelled facing. The roof is slate, with wide bracket eaves and a modillion cornice shared with Nos 18, 2, and 4. The building has rubble brick and rendered chimney stacks.
The Pier Street front has a 2+1 window arrangement, with broad channelled strips on No 18 that wrap around the corner to the right. It features small-pane sash windows with plain architraves and lintels on No 16, bracketed cills on the second floor, and panelled pilasters on the second-floor window of No 18 above a similar small-pane sash window with a later ornamental head. The channelled corner has similar windows without architraves.
The New Street front has a 3+3 window layout with channelled ends and central pilaster strips. The window ornamentation is similar, with some blocked windows; No 18 retains small-pane glazing, while Nos 2 and 4 mostly lack glazing bars.
A continuous Victorian shop front wraps around the corner, featuring a ramped and lettered fascia by Neale with bracketed ends. There is a splayed central entrance to No 16 and an offset entrance to No 198 on the left, both adorned with mosaic patterned and lettered 'doormats.' The New Street front has two tall and narrow panelled doorcases, with the left one converted into a shop window and the right one featuring a Gothic six-panelled door leading to No 2. Additionally, there is a splayed bay window with sash glazing to the right and a further shop front beyond.
