16&18 Pier Street

This is a late Georgian building of three storeys, constructed around 1800, located on Pier Street and New Street. The frontages are rendered in stucco, with some areas exhibiting a scribed texture and channelled facing. It has a slate roof, wide eaves supported by brackets, and a modillion cornice on the section facing Pier Street. The chimney stacks are a combination of rubble brick and render.

The Pier Street frontage has two plus one windows, with broad channelled strips on number 18, and extends around the corner to the right. The windows are small-pane sashes with plain architraves over number 16, bracketed sills on the second floor, and panelled pilasters framing the second-floor window of number 18, which incorporates a later ornamental head above a small-pane sash. A similar window, without architraves, is set into the channelled corner. The New Street frontage has three plus three windows, with channelled pilaster strips at the ends and in the centre, along with matching window detailing. Some windows are blocked, and the glazing is small-pane, with mainly un-divided panes on numbers 2 and 4.

A continuous Victorian shop front wraps around the corner, featuring a ramped and lettered fascia (designed by Neale) and bracketed ends. A splayed central entrance is at number 16, while the entrance to number 18 is offset to the left and includes a mosaic patterned and lettered doormat. Two tall, narrow panelled doorcases are on the New Street frontage; the one on the left has been converted into a shop window, and the one on the right leads to a Gothic six-panelled door opening into number 2. A splayed bay window with sash glazing sits to the right of the doorway, leading to a further shop front.
