Description

The buildings at 1, 3, and 5 West Street, along with Nos 1 and 3 New Street, date to 1626. They form an L-shaped structure with a corner that angles more than a right angle. The roofs are covered with old stone slate, featuring three gables. The front facade on West Street has two hipped dormers and a larger gabled dormer containing a four-light mullioned and transomed window. The gable end of the New Street wing also features a four-light mullioned and transomed window in the attic. The first floor has three four-light windows, and one late 18th-century sash window. Later windows are visible on the ground floor, and there are two low doorways. Number 3 has a rusticated doorcase. A carriageway passes through between Nos 1 and 3. The New Street front has two hipped dormers, a four-light mullioned window, a three-light mullioned window, and a late sash window to the first floor. Late 19th-century and modern shop fronts face the ground floor. A datestone is set into the West Street gable, though it is severely weathered; only the ‘26’ is visible. Nos 1 to 9 (odd) form a group.
