Description
The Old Cobbler's Shop and two adjoining cottages are located on Main Street in Dent. This building complex likely dates from the 18th century or early 19th century and has been altered over time. It features white-washed coursed rubble and stone slate roofs across two levels. The buildings are situated on a sloped site, with the lower ground at the rear.
The cottages are double-depth and single-fronted, with the cobbler's shop attached to the left gable and set back. Each cottage has two storeys over basements and features one or two windows on each floor. The doorways are square-headed, with the left doorway accessible by three steps. The left cottage has one rectangular six-pane sash window on each floor, while the right cottage has a basement window, coupled six-pane windows, and a one-light six-pane window at ground level (all of which are now top-hung casements mimicking sashes), along with two 19th-century six-pane sashes above. A ridge chimney is located at the junction of the cottages. There is also a basement doorway in the left gable wall.
The cobbler's shop to the left has one low storey over a basement, with a central doorway accessed by a flight of four steps, a basement doorway, a six-pane sash window to the right, and a six-pane fixed window to the left. A corbelled chimney is present at the left gable.
The interiors have not been inspected. This building forms a group with the adjoining Edmonson's cottage to the right.
