Description

Lytheside East Farmhouse and the adjoining cart shed are located on the north side of Ravenstonedale Low Lane. The farmhouse dates back to 1736, as indicated by a decorative panel above the door featuring the initials R. & M.F. (for Richard and Mary Fothergill). The cart shed, which is to the right and shares the same roof, was built in 1790 and bears the initials J. & I.R. (for John and Isabel Robinson).

The building is constructed from snecked rubble with quoins and has a graduated slate roof. It is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-bay design. The central entrance has a part-glazed door that is sheltered by a bracketed canopy, with sash windows on either side and three more above. The single-bay cart shed includes a pier with a segmental cart arch on the left and a semicircular head for the passageway on the right, with a sash window above. The house has corniced stone chimneys at both ends. Some original features, such as the chamfered jambs, heads, and sills from the original windows, have been retained, although later casements have been inserted.
