Description
Crosby Mill Cottage is a former house, now used for storage, dating from the early 18th century with later alterations. It is constructed of random and some coursed local rubble, topped with a diminishing Westmorland slate roof. The building has a two-unit plan and features a lean-to outshut added to the southeast when the roof was raised. It is a single storey with a loft, and the end elevations show clear evidence of heightening on the east side and rebuilding on the west side.
On the north side, there is a large doorway under an irregular stone arch, which is partially blocked, along with two other ground floor windows—one blocked and the other reduced in size. The first floor has two windows, one of which is rebated and shows evidence of a mullion that has since been removed. The south side features a blocked doorway opposite the one on the north side and includes the lean-to outshut with quoining.
Inside, there is a fireplace with a corbelled stone lintel, which now contains a 19th-century range, and a smaller fireplace above. The first floor is supported by chamfered cross beams. The roof structure includes 19th-century rafters and two trusses, with the principals having curved feet (a cruck derivative), morticed and pegged at the apex, with a halved collar and back purlins. A third truss has principals and a tie, all pegged and of good quality. The site of the stairs is located in the outshut, and planked stalls remain from the period when the building was used as a byre. Although it has been considerably altered, Crosby Mill Cottage retains much of its early character and has changed little since the mid-19th century.
