Description

The Stone House is a byre carved into the rock at the base of Ashfell Edge, dating from 1720. A large shield on the center of the rear wall features the inscription:

John ) Margt) Milner

Mich: (Haern?)snipp Fecit

The building has a large central door opening approximately 6 feet square, with rebates and surviving hinge-pins. The chamber measures about 10 feet deep, 20 feet wide, and 8 feet high, with a segmental barrel vault ceiling. It was described in a 1894 Directory as being "sufficiently capacious to contain six cows." There are now ruinous buildings added externally.
